External Network to Network Interface (ENNI)

US Signal uses External Network to Network Interfaces (ENNIs) to aggregate traffic from its Virtual Ethernet Services (VES) and hand off traffic from many geographically diverse location. ENNIs are available with either Gigabit Ethernet or 10 Gigabit Ethernet interfaces in many of the US Sigal lit buildings.

ENNI are available with the following features:

  • Gigabit Ethernet or 10 Gigabit Ethernet Interfaces
  • Link Aggregation Group (LAG) protection
  • Ethernet OAM peering

What is an ENNI?

ENNIs serve as a physical interconnection point between two Carrier Ethernet operator networks where each Carrier Ethernet network is under the control of a distinct administrative authority.

Why would I need an ENNI?

ENNIs reduce interface costs and network complexity by aggregating all Virtual Ethernet Services to a single location.

How does an ENNI work?

US Signal emulates, as closely as possible, ENNIs as outlined by the Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF) in MEF26. Ethernet OAM and Quality of Service can be peered across an ENNI.
